Join Malcolm Snelgrove for a unique 1–1 Dartmoor Horse Photography experience. This is not about staged images, but observational storytelling, understanding behaviour, hierarchy and the vital role these native ponies play in conservation grazing & biodiversity. We move quietly within the Dartmoor landscape, reading light, weather and herd dynamics to create authentic, respectful imagery rooted in connection and place. Built on over two decades of following Dartmoor’s pony herds, this experience is about patience, fieldcraft and creating meaningful images shaped by respect and understanding.

Return to Freedom is a Wild Horse Sanctuary. We photograph rescued mustangs and observe them in a natural herd environment. The free ranging mustangs graze grassy hillsides. The backdrops and views are spectacular right along the Central California Coast. This sanctuary is home to almost 100 horses, 24 burros, and about a dozen African breed Tuli or Bonsmara cattle.

This tour focuses on the Lusitano horse, one of the most expressive and athletic breeds, photographed in locations that reflect its history and character. We work with exceptional horses, skilled handlers, and carefully chosen settings. Sessions are unhurried and thoughtfully planned, with discussion about light, composition, timing, and anticipating expression. Expect strong shooting opportunities, honest critique, great food, and the conversations that happen when photographers are fully immersed in the craft.

Experience the western way of life, shooting rodeo and day to day life on a Texas Ranch. The workshop is hosted at Nine-Ranch, a 12,000 acre working ranch in the heart of cowboy country. The days will be filled with shooting rodeo and western lifestyle, as well as class instruction and review of images. You will even take part in sunset and sunrise, chuck wagon meals on the ranch and herding cattle with dogs. By the end of class you will have experienced shooting action, lifestyle, portraits and daily on a working ranch. The skills learned can be applied to all areas of photography.

Beyond photographing the largest selection of large cross-bred horses, this week long retreat is a truly spiritual experience. Your stay in one of Central California’s Coastal Valleys’ Historic Missions and meals are included. You’ll photograph and commune with lovingly raised stallions, mares, and foals bred for their size, variety of traits, and athleticism. Breeds include Shire, Gypsy, Percheron, Andalusian, Friesian, Clydesdale, Arabian, Thoroughbred, Saddlebred, and more. We photograph stallions, mares and foals, and you get lots of up close and personal time with the horses.

Three days in San Luis Obispo and two days in Lompoc, CA Return to Freedom is a Wild Horse Sanctuary. We photograph rescued mustangs and observe them in a natural herd environment in San Luis Obispo. The free ranging mustangs graze grassy hillsides. The backdrops and views are spectacular. At the Return to Freedom Lompoc location, we also photograph the famous Kiger Mustang, "Spirit" who was the artist's muse for the Dreamworks animated movie by that name. We will also do a few barn portraits in Lompoc. Learn all about this organization and its efforts to keep mustangs wild.

In the far south of France, nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and the arms of the Rhone River lies Camargue, home to a stunning breed of white horses. On this 5 day Photography Workshop we will have 7 sessions photographing these magnificent creatures during the best light of the day: sunrise and sunset. Our small group size will ensure that everyone will have plenty of space and get the help and attention they need as we watch the horses frolicking about while guided by their guardians to maximize our photo opportunities. All transportation and lodging are included in this workshop.
