Canon 50D image Quality

Postby Anna Verkade on Fri Jun 11, 2010 9:34 pm

I was at a Dressage show and too some photo's of my Mom riding with my new camera. I was using the canon 50d and canon EFS 55-250mm f/4.5-5.6 IS. The pictures are ice, but when I zoom in they are quite chunky, and not the nest quality. Is this because the camera, lens or settings???? I find Im getting better quality photo's with my point and shoot camera, but need the speed of the DSLR. I thought the canon 50d was good quality, but am now wondering whether I could get any of the photo's printed, let alone enlarged. I will attach a original photo and a cropped. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, since I still have a week to return everything.

Thank you

Anna

Anna,
When you saved these images, I think you "saved for web" which stripped the metadata, so I can't tell what your settings were. I also don't have any experience with Canon's. Just looking at these low-res versions, I were captured at a shutter speed too slow for action resulting in motion blur and two appear underexposed.
Best,
Leslie

Hi Anna,

Will you re-post your photos by downsizing them in photoshop? Please do not use the preparation for web images. As Leslie pointed out, it strips the camera data. Without the data, there is nothing to view as far as your camera settings in order to help.

Thanks,
Sharon

The camera data is there, you need to save them to your computer to see it. This new EPNet forum keeps us from seeing it online. Not sure why or if it can be fixed.

The problem maybe the lens. Rent a faster sharper lens like the 70-200 2.8 and compare the results.

Are you shooting in best quality JPGs? Or Raw? Check your settings in Image Quality and change it to the best quality you can. Also, renting a pro lens to see if the problem still occurs would be a good idea. Also, I recommend working in TV (shutter priority) instead of auto mode. This way, you decided the shutter speed and the camera does the rest. The only thing you have to check is your exposure. Good luck!
