Image Compromise

Postby Robert Bowman on Mon Feb 22, 2010 11:19 am

I have come to the mountain seeking "wise and sage" guidance. First, I am a Nikon shooter and believe I am loosing the clarity/sharpness/resolution or what ever the correct term is when transferring photos from my computer to the internet!!! I use "BREEZE BROWSER as my conduit to the internet...does someone have a better software solution? Or am I just suffering from some form of "cranial-rectal" inversion during the process??? Thanks in advance for all your solutions...rbowman

In your BB settings, when you do your proofing to convert to web size files, make sure the "sharpness" box is clicked and set at .5. Reducing the file in size to web will always make it less sharp, and some kind of mild sharpening is needed. That said, I find my web sized files on many sites look slightly less sharp anyway. I have stopped worrying about it! If you're unsure of your proofing settings, try the "help" feature. I've used BB Pro for years, and wouldn't change it for anything.

I have also used Breeze Browser Pro for several years and I love the program. Like Barb said, double check your settings in your Proofing window. Some loss of quality is to be expected with low resolution files.

Rob,

I did get your email. I'll post here though so if others have questions, they can refer here. :) I do use Breezebrowser. Now this is after I've done all my tweaks in photoshop. ;) When I save an image for web use, I use the proof option in breezebrowser. I generally have it set at 600 pixels for both sides, the program will then adjust for any difference in size and use 600 for the long side, vertical or horizontal. Use the sharpening on there but use the HQ high quality setting instead of unsharp. The other adjustment I use is is to set the dpi at 72( this one is made next to format and gives you a range of 0-100 to choose from). Those are the settings I use on there to prepare my images for upload to the web. :) If you have any more questions, just let me know. :)

Hi Darcie,
I have 2 questions . . . what percentage do you usually use for the HQ sharpening setting? The other adjustment you use I'm not quite understanding this part . . . . . . "is to set the dpi at 72( this one is made next to format and gives you a range of 0-100 to choose from", Are you referring to the proof window where you choose to resize the image and change the dpi to 72 and the image size to 600 pixels? OR is there a different place you are changing the dpi?
Thanks,
Wendy

Darcie,

Yes, thanks for the screenshot, now I see the 72 in the Quality box !!!

I think I do my proofs about the same way as you, but I do it a little different. I use the Image Size area to set my dpi and image size. If I set the dpi to 100 and max size of 6 inches on height & width, I get a max size 600 pixel image at 100 dpi. I can do the same things with 72 dpi and then adjust the inches, etc.

Does that make sense and do you think we are getting about the same results using a little different techniques? Or do you think it's important to change that Quality to 72 also?

Here's my screenshot. I have another question . . . if I change the Quality to JPEG (no exif), does that take away the copyright info I've loaded into the file?

I don't know that it makes too much difference if you are happy with the results you get. I use pixels over inches simply because then I don't have to think about too much math. LOL The one thing with this program that I notice the biggest difference with is using HQ over unsharp. It just seems that much cleaner and sharper to me. At least for web images. :)

PS, you must have a newer version, you got pink and I have blue LOL

Oh, the no Exif. Yes it will strip all the info but for image size and date , I think. Try it on one of your photos so you can see. I can't remember why I had it set for no exif. Should probably change it back. LOL

Hi Darcie,
Thanks and I'm not sure about different versions, actually the pink outline is from my Windows 7 personalization of my desktop. It puts a semi transparent pink around all my windows. I can change the color but have it pink for now :)
