The Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program http://www.fingerlakestap.org/ is the only Thoroughbred Adoption Program of its kind in the USA with an adoption facility right on the race track grounds. Established in 2006 this program has placed over 400 Thoroughbreds into new homes. All these horses ran or were in training at the Finger Lakes Track.

Funding for this program comes via donations and fund raisers, as well as $2 donated by the National Horseman's Benevolence and Protective Association http://www.hbpa.org/ for each start at teh Finger Lakes Track.
Approximately 50 volunteers work in The Purple Haze facility from cleaning stalls to starting the horses down a new career path. Here a new volunteer, Sara, gets to know one of the horses

Julie, the program director at the Center shared with me that adoptions are down this year due to the economy and they always have a waiting list of horses coming into the center. She says they try to network as much as possible with other rescues such as A Pinch of Luck Farm http://www.apinchofluck.com/ and New Vocations http://horseadoption.com/
Horses are available for adoption starting at $500..
In this photo Julie shows a recent arrival, a three year old gelding Soldi Perduti who was on his way to the New Holland auction.

The breed nearest and dearest to my heart! What a great idea to set up the rescue/rehab facilities right on the track grounds. Of course, now I want to adopt the big chestnut gelding! Such elegant, wonderful horses - it's nice to see a successful plan for saving them from auctions!
